Sumo Digital, which had previously worked on Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing (2010) and Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed (2012), developed Team Sonic Racing. Game modes include competing to earn points, time trials, customizing the racing rules, and a story-driven tutorial campaign. Team Sonic Racing differs from traditional kart racers because of its focus on cooperative gameplay, similar to the kind featured in Splatoon (2015) and Overwatch (2016)-players are part of a team of racers and win races through efficiency rather than speed.
Gameplay is from a third-person perspective, with players performing tricks, drifting, and collecting power-ups. Controlling one of 15 characters from the series' cast, players compete in races using sports cars. As a result, characters and tracks have lower detail due to system performance.Team Sonic Racing is a 2019 kart racing game and a spin-off from Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog series. While the game adds new characters from previous Sega games (including Gilius Thunderhead from the Golden Axe series and Vyse from Skies of Arcadia), it also adds a variety of guest characters which vary depending on the game platform (with the exception of both Ralph from the Wreck-It Ralph film and real-life NASCAR racer Danica Patrick). The sequel to Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, this Sega-themed racer adds a variety of new characters, levels, and gameplay mechanics (most notably the ability to transform into three different types of transportation: landcraft, watercraft, and aircraft).
